You should Want a Wovel!

So the winter of 2011-2012 started with a wimper. It looked like it was going to be one of those 'blink and you'll miss it' kind of winters, where ski hills will work all night to make snow only to have it wash away by rain the next day. One of those winters where your tulip leaves will poke up next to the south facing wall of the house. A winter where you hardly think to wear a hat because it's just not worth the effort. Just days before Christmas we were lamenting that it was going to be a 'green' holiday. But then something happened. Winter!! An old fashioned, freezing cold then snowy then freezing cold then snowy kind of winter! Let me pass along one tip, if you are a shoveller: get one of these contraptions pictured here. It's called a husband. Ha, just kidding. It's called a 'wovel'. It looks ridiculous but it really works. The 'wheel' part of the wovel makes shovelling a breeze. Do yourself a favour and get a wovel, OR try to win a trip south with 'Bob Get Me Outta Here' from our friends at Nolitours and transat holidays. As I write this, yet another winter storm warning is in effect. And yes, you will have to wovel it.

Happy New Year!!! According to business sources, the month of January is one of the top months for job hiring. So, if you're about the pound the pavement, be sure you are ready for that all-important interview. With that in mind, may I present:

THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER SAY IN A JOB INTERVIEW:

How long does it usually take to get a promotion around here?

Is this interview going to take long? I have to be somewhere in half an hour.

Why did the last person leave?

What is it that this company does?

I’m just going to go ahead and answer the question that I wished you asked.

I’m going on vacation soon so once you hire me, you will have to work around that.

I really hope I get this job because I can’t believe how great the salary is!

I would have to say my biggest strength is my ability to mimic barnyard animal sounds.

I left my previous job because it was quite obvious that I was in over my head.

My biggest weakness is probably my inability to get along with anyone.

Personal goals? Yes, I have several! I would like to win more poker games and I hope one day to own a new sofa.

Can I work from home? I don’t really like getting up in the morning.

Congratulations to Michelle Pomerant, who was chosen to live in a plexi-glass house outside the brand new 400,000 square foot Ikea!! As I write this, Michelle has been living in her temporary home for close to 2 days. If she can make it all the way to the new Ikea store opening on Wednesday morning, Michelle will be the FIRST person through the doors, with a TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR Ikea gift card!! Her plexi-glass box is quite luxurious, decorated with Ikea furniture, curtains for privacy and yes, there is a heater! Michelle's husband Mark and three children can visit as often as they like. Although, Michelle did say that one of the reasons she entered the 'First in Line with Ikea' contest, was to get some peace and quiet for five days! We will be chatting with Michelle on Bob's Breakfast to see how she's making out. What's the first thing Michelle is going to buy when she enters the new Ikea on Wednesday? A Celebration of World Suicide Prevention Day, Sept. 10th, Ottawa

Get your tickets now and don’t let the stigma that surrounds suicide keep you from attending “A Celebration of World Suicide Prevention Day”. This concert is presented by LivingWorks Education Inc. on Saturday, September 10, at Ottawa’s CentrePointe Theatre, and features three-time Juno Award winner Susan Aglukark and Irish rock band Friends of Emmet. The evening will benefit suicide prevention programs in Ottawa and area, the Collateral Damage Project, and support The Arctic Children and Youth Foundation, chaired by Susan Aglukark.

Scott Chisholm, Founder and CEO of the Collateral Damage Project, states: “We need to create an open and proactive dialogue on suicide to get rid of the stigma that surrounds it.” Chisholm further states: “This event is the first of its kind in Canada, and perhaps around the world, as it brings Ottawa together in creating a suicide safer community.”

In attendance will be Denise Batters and Alex Baumann, CEO of Own the Podium, who are members of the Collateral Damage Project advisory team and have each also lost loved ones to suicide. Baumann states: “We need to show strong community and national leadership by being a part of breaking the stigma of suicide.” Denise Batters lost her husband, former Member of Parliament Dave Batters, to suicide after a struggle with severe anxiety and depression. Denise Batters states: “I have taken a cue from Dave in openly discussing mental illness and suicide. I strongly encourage Ottawa residents to make a proactive stand for suicide prevention and join us on September 10th.”

Keith Geraghty, bass player of Friends of Emmet and passionate suicide prevention advocate, said: “This is going to be a very exciting evening for suicide prevention.”

The list of community and national partners with this event also includes: Canadian Mental Health Association – Ottawa Branch, LivingWorks Education Inc, Your Life Counts International, Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention and the Ottawa Suicide Prevention Coalition.

Bernie Needs a Home!

Why is Bernie the subject of this blog post? Because his story is quite unique. Bernie has been at the Aylmer SPCA, waiting for a home....for TWO YEARS. Two years of being 'passed over' , waiting patiently for someone to take him home. He is a great dog, a friendly dog, a dog that deserves a home.

This is the information about Bernie, as provided by the Aylmer SPCA:

" BERNIE is a handsome, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped 2-3 year old
Labrador mix who loves the water and enjoys playing with other dogs.
This big boy would enjoy a home with a fenced yard so that he can play
safely while the family is working or relaxing outdoors. He needs a
home with a firm but gentle, consistent, loving owner.
Being a black dog, Bernie is continually passed by in his cage. He
loves to be outdoors in our fenced playpen. . . and enjoys playing ball
with our volunteers. This lovely boy has been a resident at our Shelter
for almost 2 years!!
Bernie has had some basic Obedience training and our Staff would be
available to assist with Bernie's training and adjustment in a new home. Bernie becomes very attached and possessive of his family; hence, the consistency with the training."

Bluesfest in Pictures

For 12 days, music fans were treated to traditional blues, searing rock, funk-a-delic, techno pop, hip hop, pop rock, world beat and everything in between. Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest brings us something we have come to cherish: the chance to see live music in the best possible way: outdoors, during a Canadian summer. I was about 30 feet from the stage on the final Sunday of Bluesfest when Mother Nature whipped through. Scary, yes- but with an emergency plan in place, no one was seriously injured, and you could feel an entire city breathe a sigh of relief for that. I am choosing to remember Bluesfest not for that one dark moment. But for the hundreds of moments that shone. Here are some photos from the festival. Can't wait for next year.

Bluesfest Night Two!!

There was a gorgeous breeze, the sun was a warm gold and the crowd was smiling again last night as night 2 of Bluesfest got under way. One of our favourite local bands, Monkeyjunk kicked things off right on the National Bank Stage. Tony D, Steve Marriner and Matt Sobb are one powerful trio and their star power continues to rise! Caught some of Bedouin Soundclash then joined the thousands reserving their tiny piece of real estate in front of the MBNA stage. A raucous round of cheers greeted 'The Roots' : a bit of everything, hip hop, funk, metal guitar and audience teases- The Roots were electrifying! Ben Harper was next up. Harper's searing guitar style and leading man looks puts him on the world stage. He is always a favourite at Bluesfest. One of the things I love about Bluesfest is the nightly surprise: catching a band that I have never heard of, and walking away quite anxious to get my hands on their music so I can spread the word. Last night, that band was 'The Gentlemen Husbands'. If you're a fan of the Black Crowes or The Sheepdogs, and you caught the 'Gentlemen Husbands' set last night, then you were likely as thrilled as I was. Check them out on Youtube and better still, go see them next time they swing through town. They are from Cobourg Ont so chances are we will get to see them again soon.

Viva Las Bluesfest!

Night one at Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest was huge fun! Checked into my fantastic suite at the Albert at Bay, ready for 13 days of blues, rock, funk, new world, acoustic jams, zydeco and everything in between. Its all about the variety, baby! Whatever floats your boat musically, its all here! Last night's musical menu....Lindsay Ferguson, The Flaming Lips, Soundgarden, Tegan and Sara and Bootsy Collins. I managed to catch a bit of all these acts with thousands of other festival-lovers. And when all was over, an extra bonus for those of us walking east from LeBreton Flats: an amazing sidewalk performance by Liam, Jann and Quinn, the 'Brothers Dube'. At the ages of 11, 13, and 15, these kids know how to rock, and they do it for the goodness of others: $100,000 raised for charities to date. The Dube Brothers new CD release is on the sidewalk this Saturday...how cool is that! Better catch them now, before they are playing 20,000 seat arenas!

How Many Sleeps til Bluesfest?!! Just a few!!!!!!

I can hardly contain myself!!! Just ONE WEEK to go before Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest takes over this town and brings US the absolute best in live music!! For thousands and thousands of music fans, it has become something that is on our calendar, we look forward to it every year and many people of course take vacation during Bluesfest - not a bad idea if you can swing it! I like to squeeze each and every minute that I can out of Bluesfest, so once again I will be staying at The Albert At Bay Hotel, home of the BIG rooms. Staying at the Albert at Bay (just a short walk to Bluesfest) lets me have a wee bit more sleep so that I can be bright-eyed for the morning show. Another stellar line-up this year: Blue Rodeo, Tragically Hip, Peter Frampton (how many times did you wear out your vinyl 'Frampton Comes Alive'?), Cheap Trick, Jane's Addiction, the return of the amazing Steve Miller Band, a major extravaganza known as The Flaming Lips, and so many more acts- all details at www.ottawabluesfest.ca. A Good Wil Story

This isn't a story about a stolen guitar. OK, maybe it is. But more importantly, it's a story about one man who decided to do the right thing, and to give up something that he loved. His guitar.

Can you love a guitar? I have learned the answer to that question, and it's a resounding 'yes'.

Twenty years ago, and just two weeks after we met, my now-husband Rob signed over his entire paycheque to buy a 1974 custom Fender telecaster at Songbird Music on Gladstone Avenue. There was nothing left over for rent, or food, or gas. But this was the 'Keith Richards' guitar, it was rock 'n roll, it was attitude, it was midnight black, road-worn and stripped of paint in spots from being played to death. Rob had to have it.

That vintage Telecaster became part of our lives. We lived in the country, which meant that speakers could be turned up to `11` when the boys came over to rock in the living room. The guitar always seemed to go with us, wherever we went. It defined Rob`s sound when he joined `The Bleedin`Hearts`, a popular band in the 90`s known for sweaty rock `n roll, playing rock clubs and festivals everywhere. Since I was the one with the pick-up truck, the band`s gear often travelled with me. I always liked carrying the case that contained the black Telecaster because it made me feel like I was part of the band. (without an ounce of musical talent this was as close as I would ever get!)

In January of 1994, Rob`s black Fender `Telly` was stolen. Someone had kicked the door open at the band`s practice room on York Street and everything was taken. A police report was filed but Rob was given a stark statistic; only 2 percent of stolen guitars are ever recovered. Rob was devastated.

Other guitars would be bought or traded over the years, but nothing would even come close to that beat-up axe. It wasn`t just a guitar. It was like our house in the country, our dog Bono, our pick-up truck, it was part of the back-drop of our lives.

Fast forward to June, 2011. Rob and I were at a sneak preview of the new Ottawa Humane Society, where we bumped into Wil Kelly from CUPE 503. Wil and I knew each other through the 'Rock for Public Services' series of concerts. Within a few minutes, Wil turned to Rob and told him, 'I have your guitar. Your black Telecaster.'

Wil told us the story. He had purchased the guitar at a legitimate guitar shop in Ottawa five years ago. He had no idea of the guitar's history. But recent information had surfaced, and we discovered that seventeen years ago, Rob's stolen Telly had been unceremoniously dumped at a pawn shop. From there- it exchanged hands more than once- until the day that Wil spotted it and had to have it.

Ottawa's musician community is tight-knit, and they look out for each other. The story of Rob's stolen beat-up Fender Telecaster eventually made its way to Wil Kelly. Someone had made the connection: Wil's unique guitar with the dents and faded paint was, in fact, the guitar that was stolen from Rob in January of 1994.

Wil loved that vintage Fender Telecaster. He referred to it as 'his baby'. Several musicians had offered to buy that guitar from Wil, but he would never sell. It was just too precious to him.

Sunday evening, Wil arrived on our doorstep with a beaten up guitar case, containing an equally beaten up 1974 custom Fender Telecaster. Rob's guitar.

Wil handed Rob the guitar case. After seventeen years, Rob was re-united with his old friend.

Wil Kelly is a big man. With an even bigger heart. As difficult as it was, he did the right thing. My husband is appreciative beyond belief.

I'm sharing this story because it's a wonderful example of faith in humanity.

$75,000 raised for 'In the Dog House"!!

It was a hot summer night and I couldn't think of a better way to spend it: at the brand new Humane Society for 'In the Doghouse', an evening of fun and fundraising that had people 'in cages'...not allowed to taste freedom until they raised a set amount of funds. I did slip from my cage every once in a while. Thank you so much to Jerry from Hog's Back Brewery for paying my bail. Thanks to our 'judge' Stuntman Stu from Majic 100- all the wonderful restaurants, caterers, Casa Dea Wine, Hogs Back Beer, and of course the fans of the Humane Society. By night's end, $75,000 raised for the animals! Huge kudos to organizer Susan Gray: amazing job, Susan! Thanks too to Anna Silverman, Bruce Roney, countless volunteers. Next Wednesday, the animals move into their new digs! Happy days!

The early reviews for the brand new Ottawa Humane Society on West Hunt Club Road are in: it is absolutely breath-taking! Congratulations to executive director Bruce Roney, building campaign manager Anna Silverman, the incredibly dedicated Humane Society staff and the COUNTLESS animal lovers who pledged the funds necessary to achieve the long-awaited dream. If you visited the old Humane Society on Champagne Avenue with its cramped, dark conditions- and walked away feeling that Ottawa's animals and the staff that cared for them deserved so much more- you will be SO thrilled with the new digs!! Designed by award winning architect Barry Hobin, the new animal shelter is bright, spacious, cheery, and optimistic! Bruce Roney visited other state-of-the-art animal shelters throughout North America and compiled the best ideas from each of them, a little of this, a little of that, and the result is a building to be extremely proud of! The animals are moving in on June 22nd and once everyone is home, please do visit the new Humane Society. You will be so glad you did!!! The Story of Alan Brydges

His name was Alan Brydges. And as I found out recently while standing next to the Rideau River near the old Brighton Beach, he was the nicest man I never met.

It was a rainy day, and a group of us had gathered for the annual 'Swan Release'. In 1967, the Queen presented Canada with a rather unique 100th birthday gift: six pairs of Royal swans. After wintering at the 'Swan House' in Leitrim, the graceful descendants of the original birds are set free to nest and glide through a lazy summer on the scenic Rideau River.

Christine Hartig (city of Ottawa) is the program co-ordinator for the swan program.
This is my fourth year attending the swan release, and I have learned a lot from Christine. Including the fact that the swans are not given human names. Each summer, the swans are given the freedom to do what comes naturally, and to be enjoyed (from a distance) by the people of Ottawa. They are in a 'semi-wild' state, therefore, no human names. Actually, no names at all.

That's why it was so odd to hear Christine say, 'Wait til you see Big Al'. She gestured towards a wooden crate. Inside was one of the biggest swans I'd ever seen, a massive male that was all attitude and personality and impatience. He couldn't wait to get on the river. I asked about the name 'Big Al'.

Christine introduced me to Andrea McCoy-Naperstkow, a Parks and Rec manager who works out of the National Equestrian Park. Between Christine and Andrea, my question was answered.

‘Big Al’ the swan was named after Alan Brydges. Sometimes in life, we meet a person that through one reason or another, becomes our favourite person to be around. Alan Brydges was that guy. For 20 years, he worked as a foreperson at the Equestrian Park. He was caring, funny, an old fashioned gentleman farmer, non-judgmental, a dedicated family man, a hard-working jack of all trades. Alan Brydges’ often gruff personality could never truly mask his sweet core of kindness. As Christine recalls, you could ask Al if the sky was blue and he might respond with a cheeky grin, ‘Maybe, maybe not’. When the Royal Swan program was transferred to the city of Ottawa’s Parks and Rec department two years ago, Alan Brydges suddenly found himself knee-deep in swans. His manager Andrea would often hear Alan grumbling about this turn of events (not quite what Alan had signed up for), but before long, he was sneaking moments with the big white birds. Helping with their care, assisting with vet visits and of course ensuring all went well when the swans were released into the Rideau River in the spring.

Alan Brydges passed away on December 6th.

Alan’s story continued on that early morning in late May, a group of us gathered to enjoy the release of the Royal Swans. Andrea and Christine explaining the tale of the giant male swan in the wooden crate. Hatched in the swan house, this bird quickly earned a reputation for being cheeky and independent and full of character. He was different from the others. And if a swan can burst with confidence, this one did . With a personality to match his size, the big swan was stomping his feet and becoming increasingly impatient inside his wooden crate. The swan crew lifted the crate to the river banks, opened the door, and out rushed Big Al.
For Andrea and Christine and Alan Brydges’ precious family and friends, there was no doubt that this swan deserved a very special name. And as he swam from the riverbanks and flapped his wings just enough to make a scene, Big Al then looked back sweetly.

A big man’s spirit lives on, in an unlikely but magnificent form. Alan Brydges. Thank you for sharing your world with us.

It was an amazing day of community spirit and caring at the Elmdale Tavern last Saturday! The Lauren Gerro fundraiser was a great success, with over $4000 raised. Lauren Gerro is a 26 year old employee of Global Pet Foods, who had both of her legs broken by a falling tree during that awful windstorm in mid-April. Global Pet Foods' Karla Briones worked with Elmdale Tavern owners Nat and Bruce Myles to put together a benefit concert! Several bands played, the beer flowed, raffle tickets were bought and people bid on auction items. Together with the $7000 Karla already raised through her efforts, Lauren would receive $11,000 to help her through the months ahead! Lauren's parents, Douglas and Debbie were on hand, as well as Lauren's fiancee Matthew. Get well soon Lauren!

On thursday April 28th, due to the high winds, a tree fell on the corner of Wellington and Hamilton and struck Lauren Gerro, a 26 year-old staff member of Global Pet Foods. She has both legs broken in pieces below the knees and has undergone extensive surgery to both legs.

Lauren is like many part-timers. Young and works really, really hard to pay her bills. I am honoured to be the emcee of a fundraiser at The Elmdale on Saturday May 14th from 2 to 6pm. Come out and enjoy some amazing local musicians! Karla Briones from Global Pet Foods and Nat Myles from the Elmdale are gathering up as many prizes as possible, so if you can donate, please contact them!

100% of moneys raised will help Lauren through her rehab.

Tyler is a 12-year old boy. As a baby, he was diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic disorder called SIALIDOSIS. In fact, he is the only known child living with this disorder in North America . The simple explanation of it is that Tyler 's body does not produce a certain enzyme, which breaks down and disposes of waste nutrients. While it is fortunate that SIALIDOSIS is so incredibly rare, this also means extremely limited funding for any research, and very little focus on the disorder. With that being said, enzyme replacement research for SIALIDOSIS is being conducted at McMaster University. For this reason, we strive to raise funds to assist with this research in SIALIDOSIS at McMaster University through our Annual Garage Sale.
WAYS THAT HELP:

Donate items to sell. Items in good clean condition may be dropped off at our home. If you have an item that is of high value that you would like to sell, but don’t want to donate all of the proceeds, a partial donation would also be greatly appreciated. If it doesn’t sell, it will be returned to you. Heavy items can also be sold, however we are unable to pick up or deliver them for you. We would be happy to display them on a photo table with the price and contact information. Baby safety items like cribs and car seats cannot be resold because of by-laws for safety regulation. Also we have come to realize over the years we cannot sell old electronics of any sort. So please do not donate old tv’s, computer monitors, cordless telephones unless they are younger than 3 years old.

Greg Hebert Rallies Thousands to Raise Money for Cancer Research!!!!

Our friend Greg Hebert stopped by the studio this week. Greg's voice was heard many times over the years on the BOB FM morning newscasts- and along with his newscaster talents he was the host of 'Business at Night' on our sister station 580 CFRA. Greg has been fighting a rare form of cancer for the past two years. In typical Greg Hebert style, he is taking on this disease the best way he knows how: with utmost strength, a positive attitude, and he is leading an unbelievable charge- gathering the troops to hear his story, then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. And he is telling his story. To everyone. This guy is not feeling sorry for himself. With his beautifull wife Lauren supporting him every step of the way, Greg is helping to raise awareness, which in turn raises thousands of dollars for cancer research. This past Friday to Sunday was a life-changing experience for me. Eleven of us journeyed to Pond Inlet on the north-eastern shore of Baffin Island, Nunuvut, to deliver donations of hockey gear to the kids in this tiny Inuit community. The organization 'Project North' (projectnorth.ca) was co-founded by Ottawa's own Michelle Valberg, a world-class photographer who's passion for Canada's north is second to none. In fact, she currently has a wonderful photography exhibit at the Museum of Nature called 'Arctic Kaleidoscope' (www.nature.ca) Although it may not seem possible, her heart is just as big as her yearning for all things 'arctic', and "Project North' was born. After several trips to Canada's north, Michelle saw that the Inuit children had a basic need for sports equipment; skates and hockey sticks and clothing and all those good things that our children take for granted- it is all in very short supply in these remote communities. Requests for donations of these items (and cash!) were answered by the citizens of Ottawa, and the National Hockey League Dreams and Goals fund also stepped in. Big time. First Air were one of the first major sponsors, ensuring that those donations were tucked away on northern-bound planes. After a full day of experiencing the stunning landscape that is Pond Inlet, we were all invited to a frozen pond where a flat-bed pick-up truck became an impromptu stage. Hundreds of residents gathered around as Michelle thanked the Project North sponsors: First Air, Matthew Langen of the NHLPA, Scotiabank, Kott North (an Ottawa builder dedicated to building sturdy homes in Canada's north), Dymon Self Storage, and an army of supporters. $25,000 worth of hockey gear from the NHLPA was then put to the test. From the Colorado Avalanche, Kyle Quincy laced up his skates and a spirited hockey game began. Seeing the Inuit kids hustle up and down the ice in their new gear was a sight I will never forget. Karma is a beautiful thing and it was everywhere that day. More Project North trips are being planned, once donation goals are reached. Exciting times! The new Ottawa Humane Society is set to open in May (located on Hunt Club between Merivale and Prince of Wales)! Our good friends at 'A' Morning broadcast live outside the building yesterday morning! It was a beautiful night, a chance to get 'doodied up' and rub shoulders with animal lovers - and when all was said and done, $170,000 was raised at the Ottawa Humane Society Fur Ball! Humane Society executive director Bruce Roney gave a passionate speech to thank the community who have given so much towards the care for Ottawa's abandoned, lost and injured animals- and the future looks very exciting indeed, with the opening of the brand new shelter in late May! Thank you to all the sponsors, and the army of volunteers who worked tirelessly to put on quite a show.
My partner in crime, BOB FM's Stuntman Stu once again proved why he is the best auctioneer out there- hands down. Way to get people to open their wallets Stu!

My Fur Ball Dress!

The moon appeared larger than usual last night- a real treat for us in the Ottawa area especially since we had clear skies and the chance to really enjoy it. Dubbed a 'supermoon', the moon was not only at its closest point to the earth last night, it was also in full moon phase.

I was out taking photos yesterday, and saw a beautiful tree with a ring of ice around its trunk, in the Rideau River. I took several pictures of the tree. Then when I downloaded the photos, something caught my eye. I cropped the photos to get a better look at a white 'thing' in the water. It sure looks like a ghost to me!!!

Arctic Kaleidoscope at the Museum of Nature

Ottawa photographer Michelle Valberg travelled to Canada's north sixteen times and took 60,000 photos of this wondrous part of our world. It was a very special evening last Monday night, as Michelle was on hand for a sneak preview of her Museum of Nature Exhibit: 'Arctic Kaleidoscope: The People, Wildlife and Ever Changing Landscape'. The exhibit features over 80 photos that will take your breath away. Michelle's works serve to remind of us the resilience of the people of Canada's north, proudly living their lives in the midst of an often unforgiving climate. You will see images of walrus, ptarmigans, and perhaps the biggest animal star of them all: the majestic polar bear. Wildly colorful spans of tundra and sea and the fragile floe edge, all aspects of Canada's north have become works of art through Michelle's true gift, and we are thrilled that she is sharing that gift with us. Science Experiment with my Sorels!

Had a great time at Queen Elizabeth School on Friday! Science teacher Dana Hall (er, Mr. Hall I guess is the proper title) went above and beyond to help me out with a little science experiment (and a chance to have some bragging rights!)
I recently bought a pair of Sorel winter boots that are rated to MINUS 100 DEGREES FARHENHEIT! My partners at work, Stuntman Stu and Hammer highly doubted that my boots would keep my feet warm at that temperature. I needed proof that my boots would stand up to the test...problem was, Ottawa temperatures don't get anywhere near as cold as minus 100 degrees fahrenheit. (although sometimes it seems that way!) Well, lo and behold, Mr Hall and his Queen Elizabeth science students to the rescue! This past Friday my Sorel boots were plunged into a bucket of dry ice (temperature: minus 100 degrees farhenheit!)..after five minutes, we checked the temperature inside the boots, they were still toasty warm. I then put on one of my boots (student Judette put the other boot on) and we plunged them back into the ice, same result. Thanks to Mr Hall and the kids at Queen Elizabeth, I learned a valuable lesson on Friday. I should have put some money on this bet with Stu and Hammer.

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean is very much in support of the Mike Fisher Fan Club! If we get a group of us on a bus to Nashville, he is going to proclaim it 'Ottawa Day' in the city of Nashville'. We want to show Mike Fisher that we're still fans, no matter what jersey he is wearing! Just because big number 12 is a Nashville Predator now, doesn't mean we love him any less! Besides, Nashville sure sounds like quite a party town! Any town that has a whole lot of 'honkey tonk bars' has to be a great time!

Ok, so its been ten days since the news broke about Mike Fisher being traded to the Nashville Predators. As the president of the Mike Fisher Fan Club, it is finally time for me to break my blog silence on this story; I have been in denial for the past few days and just today I have summoned the strength to write about it.
Right up there with OJ Simpsons' white Bronco highway chase, I believe that this will always be a 'where were you when' story. Where were YOU when you first heard the news that our big strapping Mike Fisher was leaving Ottawa? I remember it like it was yesterday. I suppose that statement will be more admirable in 10 years. Anyway, I digress. Precisely at the time that the media was being informed that Number 12 was going to Nashville, I was two thousand miles away, at the Corkscrew Bird Sanctuary outside of Fort Myers Florida. I had dropped my friend Terrie off at a huge outlet mall and journeyed solo to the Corkscrew marshlands in search of herons and egrets to photograph. Making my way through the swamp, I suddenly stopped in my tracks at the sound of a huge shriek coming from a thicket. Birders gathered quickly, until the source of the sound finally appeared atop a bed of water lettuce: it was a limpkin!
A big brown heron-like bird with spots, not often seen and quite a cause for celebration. I was lucky enough to get some photos, but my joy at seeing the elusive limpkin was rather short-lived. It was then that the sky turned black, the birds flew away, and the birders glared in my general direction as I fumbled to answer my extremely loud cell phone. It was my husband, calling to tell me the news. Mike Fisher had just been traded to Nashville. And there I stood, alone in a humid Florida swamp, not even a limpkin to keep me company in my hour of need. Sigh. But I will say its great to be back in Ottawa, and to be part of the support system that is the Mike Fisher Fan Club, we all look out for each other, we all need to remain strong. Now we just need to figure out what to do with all of our Mike Fisher posters, action figures, and of course the life-size cardboard cut-outs. I do admit that number 12 also looks pretty good in blue. Nasvhille Road trip anyone?

Extreme Snowshoeing!!!

If you've never gone 'extreme snowshoeing', I highly recommend it! This afternoon my husband Rob and I joined Laureen Harper and some friends at Harrington Lake in the Gatineau Hills. Laureen is 'extreme outdoors woman' and loves to hike whenever she can with friends who share the same passion. Jackie, Christine, me, my husband Rob, Dan, Pierre and Laureen strapped on our snowshoes and off we went. It was wise to wear so many clothes....for the first five minutes. Climbing over fallen trees, ducking branches, and scrambling over giant Canadian shield rocks was such a great workout that jackets, hats, and gloves started coming off...left to dangle on out-stretched branches for easy retrieval on the way back. We ascended up a hill (we call them mountains in these parts, but if you're from the Rockies, these ain't no mountains), picturesque nonetheless. We followed snow-covered streams and waterfalls, trusting that there was enough of a snow pack over the rushing water. Which is why we brought men with us. Pierre and Dan didn't seem to mind the role of testing the fragility of the snow over the water, and often found it. The hard way. My husband Rob did too. I love a man who doesn't complain about getting a soaker! We tumbled down crevices, had branches whipped into our eyes, struggled to stand after twisting our snowshoes deep into the snow and landing face-first into powder, and we laughed our heads off. Extreme showshoeing. Can't wait to do it again.

Easy to Make! World's Most Decadent Cookie

This cookie recipe comes from the 'Farm of Beverly Hills' and it is known as the 'Farmeeoh Cookie'. Basically, its a chocolate sandwich cookie that will transport you directly to heaven. 341 calories in each cookie.
As I am on a diet, I plan to eat one cookie as a meal replacement for dinner each night.

Beverly Hills Chocolate Sandwich Cookie

Makes about 2 dozen cookies

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons (2 sticks) butter

2 cups (1 pound) sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 cups plus 1 tablespoon (12 ounces) flour

cup plus 2 tablespoons (2.4 ounces) cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, or in a large bowl using an electric mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, until fully incorporated. Beat in the vanilla.

2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.

3. Beat in the dry ingredients, a spoonful at a time, until incorporated to form the cookie dough. Scrape the bowl partway through to make sure the ingredients are fully mixed. Cover and refrigerate the dough until chilled.

4. Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Scoop the dough into tablespoon-sized pieces, and place on parchment-lined baking sheets. Flatten each cookie slightly, and bake each sheet until the cookies are set, 10 to 12 minutes.

5. Remove and cool before filling. This makes about 5 dozen individual cookies.

Filling and assembly

1 cups butter

6 cups powdered sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 tablespoon plus teaspoon water

1 teaspoon salt

Cooled cookies

1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, or in a medium bowl using an electric mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla, water and salt. Scoop 1 generous tablespoon of filling onto one cookie, then top with a second, pressing together until the filling comes to the edge. Repeat to make 2 dozen sandwich cookies. You might have a little frosting left over after filling the sandwiches; any extra frosting will keep for 1 week, covered and refrigerated.

They make great pets, and a mean head of hair! Ch-ch-chia! As I continue to struggle with my diet, this is my tip for the day. Eat your chia! Even Dr Oz says its a good idea, so it must be true.

The chia seed was said to help sustain energy levels by the Aztec warriors during battles. And the Indians, who ate the chia seed, did so, to help them run from the Colorado River to the California coast to trade.

The seeds are from a chia plant which is a member of the mint family. They don’t have much of a taste.

Besides becoming a beloved pet, here are some of the benefits of chia seeds:

build muscle and tissue
help stop cravings for sweet treats
stabilize blood sugar
perfect for people with diabetes
gluten free
help in detoxing your body
easily digested and absorbed

Chia seeds are being hailed as something which can help people lose weight. Help! I'm Hungry!!

Memories. They are all I have now.
This is me, w-a-a-y back in July. During the days of Bluesfest, staying at the Albert at Bay Hotel, eating pogos whenever my heart desired. If you look closely, that is in fact a pogo on my plate. I think I had already put the mustard on it.
Back then, on those hot summer Bluesfest days, I wore a size medium top. A different one every day. But always size medium. Today, almost 6 months later, all my size medium tops are waiting for better days, when I can actually fit into them again. I have graduated from 'medium', to 'melarge'. Melarge is the size between medium and large, that doesn't really exist in stores. But more on that another day. So yesterday I started my new diet. Or, 'lifestyle choice', for those who prefer that term. I think that's what Oprah calls it. I refer to it, as the 'Delicious Diet'. Which means, if its delicious, I don't eat it. Unfortunately, pogos are delicious. I have 20 to 25 pounds to lose before the Humane Society Fur Ball, March 26th. In the meantime, if anyone knows where I can find some clothes in size 'melarge', let me know. Thanks

Scales that are LIARS!!!

Molly went missing on Tuesday evening from Richmond. She is a Bernese Mountain dog, with this amazing personality..
We have a strong feeling someone has taken her, for what reason this scares us the most. She is part of our family, and like a daughter to my husband and I. I am almost 9 months pregnant, but have been walking miles everyday to find her, and lets just say this isn't the weather for me to be out there. We're just a few days into the new year and I have made an observation about the way people seem to be feeling. More than any other January, I've had people give me the dark stare of gloom if I bring up the words 'New Year resolution'. Ha! I'm not a 'resolution' kind of person either, so I haven't been taking the dark stares of gloom personally. By making a resolution, we are really just setting ourselves up for failure, because we are under some kind of social pressure to make a resolution. The pressure comes from a TV news story, or a newspaper, or a magazine article, or a guest on Oprah. But the only way we will stick to positive change, is if we decide to do it on our own terms, and hey, lets do it in June. Or August. Or November for that matter. So, I am glad to join in the anti-spirit of resolution making. But, if I was going to make a New Years resolution, it would definitely be to watch more episodes of 'Hoarders'.

If you want a really great outing with the kids, bundle them up and take them to the 'Old Quarry Trail', which you can access (lots of parking) across from the Hazeldean Mall on Hazeldean Road. Bring sunflower seeds for the chicadees, they will eat right out of your hand. And, you may get lucky and find yourself face to face with a beautiful deer, or two. (the two deer pictured above didn't mind having their photo taken) Going for a hike in the woods beats a new year's resolution any day of the week. (thanks to my friend Derrick for the tip about this trail, I love it!)

The Greatest Gift

It is Christmas morning and I just read this note from one of our listeners. I wanted to share it with everyone:

'The Greatest Gift'

"Not sure why i am writing this to you, maybe because I need to tell someone. I was at work Friday and I lost my wallet which contained 800 dollars. The security guards looked all over the mall for it. It was eventually recovered minus the 800 dollars. You are probably wondering why this is a good thing? Well I guess while the security guards were looking they mentioned what they were doing to the girls who worked at second cup. This kind woman came downstairs and brought me a cookie and I told her that I had not bought my daughters gifts yet and now i couldn't. This was a job I just began and Dec 24 was my first paycheque. She wished me well and left. Later in the day she and a co-worker came back and explained to me that all the girls got together and decided to give me their tips from the day to give my daughter the christmas she deserved. I tried to refuse but they were insistent. Now this was totally remarkable to me because I have had a very hard life and it has made me synical and taught me not to trust anyone or what their motives may be. No one has ever done anything like this for me and truth be told I never believed these selfless and generous people existed.
So, if you could send a special thank you to the second cup girls in L'esplinade Laurier I would apreciate it. This is what Christmas is suppose to be about and without them my daughter would not have had a Christmas at all. I am a changed person from this. They, for the first time, have made me a believer that there is good in people, excluding the guy who actually took the money.'

Best Two Cookie Recipes - For Humans AND for dogs!

Just in time for Christmas baking (and giving as gifts) :
I would now like to pass along the TWO BEST COOKIES RECIPES IN THE WORLD!!!!! The first cookie recipe is for KIDS (big and small!) and the second cookie recipe is for DOGS!! Do not get them mixed up!

'Chocolate Crunch Cookies' (for people)

1 1/2 cups butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 cups oats
2 cups Rice Krispies cereal
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
1/2 cup pecans
1. preheat oven to 350
2. mix together butter, sugars, eggs and vanilla in a large bowl until well blended
3. add flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, oats, Rice Krispies, chocolate chips, and pecans and stir together
4. drop batter on baking sheets in large mounds of about 3 tbsp, 3 inches apart, and flatten with hand. Bake for 8 to 9 minutes or until pale gold.

Tasty Treats - FOR DOGS!!!!!

1 1/4 cups water
1 1/4 cups peanut butter
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup all purpose flour
1 1/4 tsp baking powder
preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix water and peanut butter in a large bowl until smooth. Combine flours and baking powder in a separate bowl, then gradually stir into wet mixture. Knead dough by hand, adding small amounts of water if consistency is too dry. Roll onto a lightly floured surface and cut treats with a cookie cutter. Bake on cookie sheet for 15 minutes. Cool for several hours before storing!

6 days in New Orleans

When my friend Jay and I decided to go on a last minute trip to the city of New Orleans, we both agreed that we would not visit any of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. Although it's been five years since America's biggest natural disaster, news reports suggest that New Orleans' recuperation is, in many areas, very sluggish. Gawking at someone else's misery was the last thing we wanted to do.
Once we arrived in the 'Big Easy' we quickly discovered that our hotel on the corner of Bourbon and Toulouse was the exact epicentre of all the action, which included but was not limited to; bars, live music venues, adult venues, restaurants dishing out gumbo and jambalaya, mystic shops, and pedestrians by the thousands, who journeyed up and down the streets of the French Quarter clutching either a) a musical instrument b) a drink or c) a handful of beads. We stepped out of our hotel onto Bourbon Street, merged into pedestrian traffic and quickly soaked up the atmosphere. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. On day 2, Jay and I decided to take a city bus tour (something I had never done before, in any city, ever...but it seemed like the right thing to do in New Orleans, a city steeped in so much history, I wanted to know the significance of this building or that sculpture. I bought my $44 city bus tour, proud that I was actually willing to learn something, never a pre-requisite for me when I'm on holidays)
Hurricane Katrina is everywhere. Not physically. But it is still very much alive in the minds of the residents who endured her wrath. And they are nowhere near ready to stop talking about it. Within a few minutes of meeting anyone who lived in New Orleans in August 2005, they are telling you their Katrina story. It usually starts with the amount of water that came into the house. For some, it was three feet. Some, seven or eight feet of water. And we heard horror stories from people who were desperately searching for loved ones while the water from the nearby man-made canals streamed under the front door, then exploded to a depth of 13 or 14 feet. One woman was lucky to grab a loaf of bread as it floated by her face, just in time to scramble to the attic; the last one of the family to reach the 3 foot high crawlspace that would be refuge to her and her children for days and days, awaiting rescue in the scorching New Orleans summer heat. Why did everyone want us to know their story?
The city tour gave us the answer. Despite the fact that Jay and I did not want to go to the hurricane-ravaged areas, within minutes our tour guide was pointing out the New Orleans convention centre, which provided shelter for thousands of displaced victims. We also saw the Superdome, now home to Superbowl champions 'The Saints', with sky-high signs celebrating that fact...but in late August 2005, the Superdome was another refuge for thousands of people who had absolutely no place to go. And, just when things couldn't get much worse, the roof of the Superdome had collapsed under the strain of the hurricane. As our tour bus entered the Ninth Ward, we remained silent, finding it difficult to grasp the intensity of this real-life Stephen King story.
From our comfy homes in Ottawa, we had watched the CNN footage of the devastation of the Ninth Ward, where houses had all but disappeared under the water. But today, it is a different story. Yes, there are still homes that are shattered and abandoned, but we witnessed hope- construction crews working diligently to restore the community. For every abandoned house, there are ten that have been re-built, with care taken to build them stronger, and higher, and tougher. Kids' bikes in the laneways, gardens, neighbours doing what neighbours do.
It may be a simple analogy but I couldn't help but compare Hurricane Katrina to the story of 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'. For thousands of residents of New Orleans, their worldly possessions were stolen away and they were left with nothing. But the hurricane could not take the one thing that was most important, the spirit of the people.
I have never been in a city so vibrant, so full of life, so exciting, and so friendly. It can take you an hour to walk one city block, simply because everyone wants to stop and talk to you. The people of New Orleans are genuinely interested in your life, who you are, where you came from. They are passionate, resilient, with a love of music and food and fun. The New Orleans gusto is legendary. And they want everyone to know the story of Katrina not to dwell on the past, but to show that they are stronger for it. Go to New Orleans. They will welcome you with open arms, play a song for you on the street, and tuck some colorful beads into your hand. I'm happy to pass along the message they are sending: New Orleans is back, baby!

Coming Apart : There is Hope, There is Help

Our community has come together to show support for Ottawa Senators coach Luke Richardson, his wife Stephanie and the Richardson family, days after the tragic news that 14 year old Daron Richardson took her own life. Despite their unimaginable pain, the Richardsons have been extremely courageous and have opened a dialogue about a topic that is rarely discussed: suicide. Now more than ever our society is seeing the need to talk about it openly, in order to spread the word that hope and help is available.
Irish band 'Friends of Emmet' wrote and recorded a song called 'Coming Apart', based on the story of Kevin Hines, a 19 year old who survived a suicide attempt. Kevin Hines now travels the country to tell his story, offer words of encouragement, and discuss the help that is available for those who are seeing nothing but darkness.

Foxy needs your help and your prayers.

Some of you may already know about the tragic loss Barrhaven resident Mike Wass has suffered just recently with the loss of his wife Jaye on October 22nd 2010. She was killed in a car accident while visiting in San Jose. Their Son, Kyler was also in the car and was severely injured This is such a tragedy and it has torn this young family apart. Unfortunately, this was not the only tragic accident that has affected this family recently. Mike just arrived home from the hospital with his son and found out that the dog that Mike, Jaye and Kyler love so much also had an accident and was injured. Foxy has a blown disk in her back and will require a very expensive surgery to give her the best possible chance at surviving and having the quality of life she deserves. She is such a wonderful dog, affectionate, playful, energetic and always so happy. She is such a big part of the Wass family.

Mike has already lost his wife and Kyler has lost his mother. Lets do everything we can to make sure they do not have to suffer through the loss of their beloved pet Foxy.

This is a cool new initiative that will save pets' lives! Andrea Cormack-Akesn, owner of the 'Dirty Dog Gourmet Bakery', is raising money to buy pet oxygen mask kits so they can be placed on Ottawa fire trucks. In the event of a fire, smoke inhalation can be just as deadly to animals as people. Each oxygen mask kit costs about 55 dollars. This afternoon, the First Air hangar was the location for some very exciting news! Donations of hockey gear for Inuit children in our northern communities just got a much-needed gift: fifty more sets of brand new equipment from the National Hockey League Players Association (adding to their previous donation!) Project North creator Michelle Valberg was thrilled to host a very special news conference. Mrs Laureen Harper is a fan of Project North and was on hand to show support for this wonderful cause, along with Ottawa Senators' Chris Phillips and his wife Erin. Huge thanks to Scott, Chris and Judy from First Air, who have donated cargo space on several flights to northern communities- bringing hockey bags stuffed with gear to some very excited kids. The most recent donated gear is headed to Hall Beach north of the Arctic Circle. 2010 National Aboriginal Role Model Heidi Langille and a very sweet Inuk boy Yavuz Sundu accepted the gear on behalf of the community of Hall Beach. Kids Reveal The 10 Secrets Of Getting The Best Haul While Trick-Or-Treating

#1.) The "cuter" the costume, the more candy you'll get.

#2.) Pillowcases hold twice as much candy as plastic grocery bags, and three times as much as the classic orange pumpkin. And if you decorate your pillowcase, people won't think you're just trying to be greedy.

#3.) If there are little kids at a door ahead of you, move on. They'll take forever to choose their candy and just slow you down.

#4.) Strike early. The good candy always goes first. There's no reason to be the last people out trick-or-treating.

#5.) BUT . . . if you do see some houses that still have their lights on late, swing by. The person may want to unload everything and give you a handful instead of a single piece.

#6.) Lots of decorations in the yard are a sign of high-budget candy. The family there clearly cares about Halloween.

Hi everyone, I am posting a letter that I received this week. The good news, is that two notorious puppy mills are closing. Now, these dogs need homes!

I know you are an animal lover. I wonder if you could post the following on your blog in hopes that some people may donate to help.

Two of the worst puppy mills in Missouri are closing. Yeah! However, they are selling their roughly 800 dogs at auction. Some will be bought by other puppy mills but hopefully most will be purchased by people in rescue. However, these rescuers need money to make that happen.

Had a great time at the 'Aware Festival' yesterday, where several animal rescue groups got together under one roof (Rideau Carleton Raceway)! A day of entertainment by Dominic D'Arcy and his very talented rising stars, lots of dogs, and a walkathon around the track - it was a lot of fun! Congratulations to 12 year old Leah Cosman, who celebrated her birthday at the 'Aware Festival', along with her brother Evan, 12 friends, her sweet springer spaniel, and her parents- Leah insists each year that instead of birthday gifts, her friends and family donate to a chosen animal charity! A photo of Leah and the gang is included here, (last photo, oops, meant to put it first but I did things a bit backwards) naturally the birthday girl is up front with her dog. Way to go Leah!

When I was a kid growing up, I always talked about becoming a veterinarian. That didn't quite work out! Probably because I fainted at the sight of needles. But here is your chance to discover the world of veterinary medicine, and help a great cause at the same time! Dr Michelle Lem is hosting a 'Mini Veterinary School', running for five consecutive Friday evenings at Algonquin College. You will learn about animal care, animal therapy and many other interesting topics, for a cost of just $100- with proceeds going to the Mission Veterinary Care program. This program has brought veterinary care to 1,100 animals of the homeless people at the Ottawa Mission, since 2003. It is operated by volunteer veterinary professionals and they need your support! Operation Blue Heron Storm

This past Friday morning, at 10am, a group of us gathered by a swamp somewhere in Limoges. 'Operation Blue Heron Storm' was underway. Goal: to catch a great blue heron with an injured wing, and bring it to the Wild Bird Care Centre. Big thanks to Marc Chubb and his crew, Scott and John, of Humane Wildlife Control for all their efforts. (www.humanewildlifecontrol.com...great guys, they can help you animal-proof your home) There was only one thing missing. The heron. With his injury, he can't fly, but he sure can run. And into the woods he went! After a couple of hours of stalking, waiting, strategizing, we all called it a day. Operation Blue Heron Storm will be back. Oh yes, mark our words, it will be back. Hopefully the heron will be too.

Saturday Night's Alright for Rockin'!!

Last night, the Civic Centre shook for the 3rd annual 'Rock for Public Services' presented by CUPE, CUPE 503 and CUPE 4000! It was a free concert starring Downchild Blues Band (and special appearance by Jonas), Sass Jordan and Kim Mitchell! 3 signed guitars were raffled off, with all proceeds to the Ottawa Boys and Girls Club. The crowd danced and sweated the roof off the place- it was a great night!
Kudos to Brian Madden and Wil Kelly, not to mention the countless volunteers!

What You'll Look Like in Twenty Years?

Researchers from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland released images of study participants this week, projecting how they'll look in 20 years if they exercise, and how they'll look if they don't.
The imaging technology, which has been developed over the last 15 years, used mathematical models to predict how the shape, color and texture of the face change in those who don't exercise regularly.
The researchers defined regular exercise as 30 minutes of moderate activity, five times a week.
The aim of the study was to show how an active lifestyle can improve appearance as well as health. The process took into account the average annual weight gain that occurs with aging – about 1 ¼ pounds (0.5 kilograms) for women and 1 ½ pounds (0.7 kg) for men. Images of the participants' faces were also created assuming the participants exercised regularly.
"The participants seeing these images were relatively shocked by them," researcher Ross Whitehead said, "and all resolved to improve their exercise regimen."

Ok.. now I don't know if its just me.....but can you tell the difference between what the person looks like now and what they will look like without exercise in 20 years? Hmmm........

And now, Silly Bandz is a multi-gazillion dollar corporation!! Remember the 'pet rock' and the 'slinky', cabbage patch kids and 'Tickle Me Elmo'? Silly Bandz is poised to join these incredible examples of merchandising gone mad! Doesn't it make you want to invent something?
